The Ashish Ready to Wear collection for autumn/winter 2014 took place in the Topshop show space in the Tate Modern. There was already a buzz around the much anticipated show before the designer, Ashish Gupta announced pre show that he would be collaborating with Topshop. The collaboration will consist of around 30 looks including swimwear. I, for one, cannot wait. Ashish is such a fun, quirky and cool brand and a Topshop collaboration would make it more attainable, similar to previous collections featuring J W Anderson and Mary Katrantzou.
On to the show; I'm currently researching kitsch styles for my honours projects and the overall theme appeared to be bedraggled prom queen so I immediately loved it. In previous collections Gupta had used a lot of sequins but replacing them for a/w 2014 was an abundance of pearls. This collection has also been noted for the silhouettes used, his usual shapeless and baggy forms replaced by structured garments. Even the prom queen inspired skirts were angular.
Of course it wouldn't be Ashish without some showmanship and each outfit had its own sparkle or twinkle effect. All models were wearing LED platforms which lit up and the main themes of the show were sequinned demin, tinsel and sparkle. Gupta had even adorned a tracksuit with twinkling tinsel threads and I love the juxtaposition of the casual and dressy. True to Ashish style; Gupta was quoted as saying "If I was going to do a jogging suit, I wanted it to be the sharpest one ever."
